Land Information
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based system for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis and display of spatial data.
The GIS that St. Quentin has developed can be applied to any project of any size, and can be posted on a web server to enable selected access by approved personnel.
Typically, as a base we utilise the information we gather as surveyors (e.g. feature survey) and upload this data into a web browser. However, the base data for the GIS will vary depending upon the specific nature of the project and the needs of the end user, and can also include digitised and scanned data, databases, or data from remote sensing and aerial photography.
Using this base information we can create a range of geo-referenced layers that are critical to the project (or specific components of the project) and the particular needs of the end user, such as:
- Underground service locations;
- Photographs;
- Spreadsheets containing information relevant to a particular feature / aspect of the project;
- Scanned reference documents; and
- Text pertaining to any elements that are shown in graphic format.
Once appropriate layers have been created the GIS can be utilised to rapidly retrieve, analyse, model and map issues of particular interest to the end user. GIS is commonly used to accurately map and monitor physical and spatial change, map the relationships between places, assets and features, and to determine what is occurring in the vicinity of particular features.
Within the land development industry, geographic information systems are now widely utilised for land use and development planning, asset and facilities management, landscape assessment, market analysis and a broad range of other applications.
It is critical that the data that is imported to create relevant layers is maintained to ensure its currency, thereby ensuring the ongoing accuracy and usefulness of the GIS tool. Consequently, the implementation of appropriate processes for the capture and updating of this data is as important as the initial set-up of the GIS.
St Quentin Consulting can provide GIS set-up and data capture / updating services.
